ICTHES World Care was founded in 1999 by
Dr. Murray McGavin in order to address the
desperate lack of training resources experienced
by many health and community workers in
developing countries.
Having worked as an eye surgeon in Afghanistan
over several years, Dr. McGavin witnessed
first-hand the vital difference that a
well-equipped health worker can make within local communities. Lives are saved,
unnecessary suffering is reduced, and the standard of living is raised throughout the
community. Further short-term visits to other nations, such as Mozambique,
Cambodia and Somalia confirmed that this is true throughout the developing world.
In response to the needs he had personally seen, Dr. McGavin founded the Journal
of Community Eye Health, which he edited over 16 years, in partnership with the
International Centre for Eye Health, London. This unique publication now reaches
15,000 health workers in more than 170 countries.
The success of JCEH prompted the founding of ICTHES World Care, in order to
replicate the impact of JCEH in other fields of health and education.
As a result, health workers in more than 200 countries are now receiving vital
support, free of charge, to address the issues they face in the course of their
work — such as burn injuries, land mine injuries, mental illness, deafness /
hearing problems and skin disease.
An independent survey of recipients of the Journal of Community Eye Health
showed that 60% have no other resources available to them. If anything, the
areas addressed by ICTHES World Care
are even more poorly supported.
Through voluntary partnerships with
leading specialists with overseas experience,
in a spirit of Christian love and service, we
believe we can make a difference.
This is why we have a passion to change
lives in thousands of communities
throughout the world.
